Gophers Ground Squirrels and Moles are all considered burrowing rodents. Although Moles are found in Colorado, they are only found on the Eastern Plains. Gophers, (Pocket Gophers specifically) and Ground Squirrels however are found throughout the metro area and into the mountains.  These critters not only carry disease and ruin yards/grounds, they can also affect foundations, irrigation issues and potential negative effects on septic systems as well as underground electrical and plumbing.  Both can cause issues with gardening, seeding of grass and growing younger trees (as these animals can chew and eat roots. Although they are often found in the same areas, their burrows are significantly different.

Gopher Holes

• Dirt is pushed up creating mounds (usually in “sections” where multiple mounds move upward)
• Can be closed off underground to keep predators and the cold out
• Can be vast and spread from 200-2000 ft in length (3” in diameter)

Ground Squirrel Holes

• Angled holes that are dug from the top down (not as piled as Gopher Holes)
• Mass amounts of holes which are clustered together
• 10-20 ft in length (1-2” in diameter)
